Douglas M. Lange, M.D.
Dr. Lange practices general orthopedic surgery with a special interest in total joint reconstruction at Muir Orthopaedic Specialists. He has been trained in the minimally invasive surgery for both hips and knees, which is indicative of his commitment to his patients.
A natural leader with infinite patience, he has held numerous leadership positions including Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery and Chief of Medical Staff at John Muir Medical Center. He also served on the Board of Trustees at John Muir Medical Center.
Dr. Lange began practicing orthopedic medicine in 1975 after earning his medical degree from Emory University in Atlanta, GA. Dr. Lange completed his ensuing internship and residency at the University of California, San Francisco, where his southern demeanor and dedication inspired both patients and colleagues and complemented the extensive training.
My Approach to Treating Patients
I arrived in Walnut Creek, California in 1975. I grew up in the South and came west looking for an internship and some adventure. I never made it back home. I met and married a lovely San Francisco lady.
For years I have focused on joint replacement surgery, attending each year a number of national meetings related to joint replacement techniques, as well as visiting the operating rooms of other joint replacement specialists across the country to learn their special techniques.
Over recent years I have restricted my practice to total hip and total knee replacement surgery. This has allowed me to focus my energy on work that has become my passion. Over recent years, I have performed between 250 and 300 total joints per year.
Joint replacement surgery is incredibly gratifying work. We love to see a patient restored to a pain free and active lifestyle.
We perform total hip and total knee surgery using the latest techniques and updated equipment. (I use mostly Zimmer implants; see their website for more information). I can perform the MIS (minimally invasive surgery) surgical techniques on both hips and knees. My emphasis and priority are to perform total joint surgery that will last a lifetime, following precise and efficient techniques with minimal complications. Most patients are home within three days.
Fortunately, most hip and knee conditions do not require surgery and can be managed conservatively. Ever effort is made to provide the best quality of care in the most personal fashion possible. I strive to educate our patients regarding all aspects of conservative and surgical alternatives so that they can make the most intelligent decision regarding their orthopedic care.
